Biography

Trent MacNamara is a U.S. social and intellectual historian. His work concerns the fundamental ideas of ordinary Americans.

His first book, Birth Control and American Modernity: A History of Popular Ideas (Cambridge U.P., 2018), explores how family limitation became popular and legitimate among ordinary Americans in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

His current research examines Americans’ changing ideas about the material and spiritual contents of the heavens, starting around 1800 and ending in the space age. Articles from this project have appeared in the Journal of American History and Religion and American Culture.
