The Communication and Media Science Division prioritizes research on media impacts and intervention science. Its research on media impacts explores the effects of new and emerging media technologies on society, employing qualitative, quantitative, and computational methods. Work focuses on such content areas as AI ethics, misinformation and disinformation, and media selection. The division's attention to intervention science seeks to advance rigorous scientific methodologies to tackle complex social challenges, some stemming from media impacts and others from interpersonal dynamics. Key content areas include health communication, organizational communication, and strategic communication. Through empirical research that develops deep understandings of social problems and interventions, the division equips students with the skills necessary to make a positive societal impact.
