Award Background. Dr. Larry Guseman was a professor in the Mathematics Department at Texas A&M University from 1968 until 1991. He was widely recognized as a distinguished member of the Texas A&M community, outstanding in every aspect of his work. Not only was he a renowned research mathematician, working on pattern recognition and remote sensing of satellite data, he was a devoted teacher who enjoyed the classroom and was popular with and respected by his students. In 1984, he was awarded the Association of Former Students' Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching, and in 1988, when Texas A&M first established the Office of Graduate Studies (now the Graduate and Professional School), Dr. Guseman served as its first graduate director. Colleagues and students alike remember him for his wit and wisdom, as well as his thoughtfulness and leadership.
The Guseman Prize was established in 1995, and is given annually to one or more outstanding graduate students in math who demonstrate excellence in research and exemplify the spirit and good will of Larry Guseman.
